Fit, Sizing and Alterations

Our classic fit shirts follow a traditional British cut, offering a more generous fit than many modern high street brands. Designed for comfort and ease of movement, they provide a fuller silhouette through the chest and body while maintaining a smart and refined appearance.

Our slim fit shirts offer a more tailored silhouette while still allowing for comfort and ease of movement. Compared to many high street slim fits, the cut is slightly more generous through the body, creating a cleaner and more refined fit suitable for both business and formalwear.

The best shirt fit depends on both your body shape and how you prefer your shirts to feel and sit when worn.

Our shirts are generally true to size and are designed with traditional British shirt proportions in mind. We also include a small shrinkage allowance within the collar and sleeve measurements to account for natural shrinkage after washing.

Collars, Cuffs and Shirt Construction

Most Harvie & Hudson shirts feature a classic Kent collar. This timeless collar style offers a balanced spread that works well with both ties and open collar styling.

The Kent collar is one of the most versatile collar styles for business, formalwear and everyday tailoring.

Double cuff shirts are designed to be worn with cufflinks and are generally considered more formal, making them ideal for business wear, evening dress and special occasions.

Button cuff shirts offer a more versatile option suited to everyday business and smart casual dressing.

Our double cuff shirts are designed to fit most standard cufflinks. However, some larger or wider cufflink designs may fit more tightly depending on their size and fastening style.

Harvie & Hudson shirts are traditionally cut with slightly longer tails to help keep the shirt neatly tucked in throughout the day. This classic British shirtmaking detail helps maintain a cleaner appearance when sitting, bending or moving, particularly when worn with tailoring and formal trousers.

Fabrics, Quality and Formality

Poplin, twill and herringbone shirts are among the most popular choices for business wear. White and light blue shirts remain the most versatile options for pairing with tailoring and professional dress codes.

You can explore our full range of business shirts online.

For black tie occasions, we recommend a classic white dress shirt, ideally with a Marcella front and double cuffs for cufflinks. A Kent collar or formal evening collar pairs well with a bow tie and traditional dinner jacket, creating a timeless formal look.

Different shirt fabrics offer varying textures, weights and levels of formality depending on how the shirt will be worn.

  • Poplin - smooth and crisp, ideal for business and formalwear
  • Twill - soft and durable for everyday business wear
  • Oxford - more textured and suited to smart casual dressing
  • Herringbone - subtle woven texture for refined business shirts
  • Marcella - traditional eveningwear fabric used for dress shirts

You can read more in our guide to shirt fabrics and styles.

Twill shirts are generally easier to iron than poplin shirts due to their softer diagonal weave and greater crease resistance.

Most Harvie & Hudson shirts are crafted from 100% cotton, offering natural comfort, breathability and softness. We also avoid heavily treating our fabrics with harsh chemicals, helping maintain the natural softness and feel of the cotton.

A high-quality shirt is defined by its fabric, construction, fit and finishing details. Premium cotton, precise stitching, well-constructed collars and carefully balanced proportions all contribute to a shirt that looks refined and lasts over time.

Some shrinkage is completely natural after washing. Our shirts are made with a shrinkage allowance of approximately 3/4 of an inch on the sleeve and 1/4 of an inch on the collar.

We recommend washing shirts at 40°C to help minimise excess shrinkage.

We recommend washing shirts at a maximum temperature of 40°C and avoiding tumble drying where possible to help preserve the fabric and finish.

You can read our full shirt care guide for more advice on washing, ironing and maintaining your shirts.

To achieve a crisp finish, lightly spray the collar and cuffs with water, roll the shirt gently with the collar and cuffs in the middle, and leave it for around 30 minutes before ironing. When ironing the collar, always work from the collar points towards the centre.

A well cared for shirt should last several years. Longevity will naturally depend on how often the shirt is worn, washed and cared for over time.

Following the correct washing and ironing instructions can help extend the life of your shirt.
