If you've never tied one before, don't worry, it's easier than it looks. Once you've tried it a few times, it becomes quick and easy.
What Is a Cravat?
A cravat is a wide neckband worn inside an open shirt collar. It is considered the predecessor to the modern necktie and is often worn with:
- Morning suits
- Wedding attire
- Formal waistcoats
- Vintage or classic menswear
Unlike a tight necktie, the cravat is meant to look slightly relaxed and stylish.
When Should You Wear a Cravat?
Cravats are perfect for:
- Weddings, especially for grooms
- Formal parties
- Vintage or classic events
- Royal Ascot and traditional dress codes
They create a refined, elegant look that stands out from a normal tie.
How to Tie a Cravat
Step 1: Place the Cravat Around Your Neck
Place the cravat around your neck underneath your shirt collar. Let one side hang slightly longer than the other.
Step 2: Cross the Longer End Over
Take the longer end and cross it over the shorter end to form an X shape.
Step 3: Bring the Long End Up Through the Loop
Lift the longer end up and pass it through the loop around your neck. Pull it down gently.
Step 4: Cross Over Again
Bring the long end across the front once more. This forms the visible front of the knot.
Step 5: Tuck the End Through
Now tuck the long end through the knot again. Pull gently to tighten while keeping the fabric smooth.
Step 6: Arrange and Tuck
Spread the fabric so it looks neat and slightly full. Then tuck the ends into your waistcoat or shirt.
Tips for Wearing a Cravat
- Keep the knot slightly loose so it looks relaxed.
- Pair it with a waistcoat for formal events.
- Choose silk or satin cravats for weddings.
