Green Gingham Classic Shirt

Often it pays to be particular. At Harvie & Hudson we have been drafting and cutting shirts for over 50 years, and that expertise shows in every shirt that we place on our shelves. Our Green Gingham shirt is an evergreen favourite – managing to be classic and cool, with a rich historical backstory. It is made up in two-fold cotton poplin, which gives an effortlessly crisp collar, and cut for a Classic Fit. We’ve completed it with gleaming Mother of Pearl buttons and a double cuff – in sum, it’s a shirt with enviable heritage and immaculate finish. If you don’t already have a green gingham shirt, why not?

The story of Gingham

Gingham has a fascinating heritage; it has been loved and worn by a huge diversity of people in the last 200 years. Brought to Britain during the 17th century via the East India Company, gingham (which was originally striped) was an early hit. The mills in Manchester began weaving the cloth in checks, and its reputation was secured. Gingham shirts became fashionable all over the world, essential to the style of 1950s American rockabillies, 1960s British mods, and even Marilyn Monroe, who was pictured wearing a men’s gingham shirt. Sean Connery had a penchant for gingham shirts (blue and pink) in the James Bond films, and a pink gingham dress launched Biba. This century, Manchester United even launched a gingham strip… but, like Bond, we prefer the classic gingham shirt.
